January 2025 update

Happy new year! We had a busy end to 2024, releasing the new KPI Heatmap for deeper insights on KPI models and their underlying drivers, KPI Impact analysis, and a new Data Trends view that shows all key metrics from the vendors you subscribe to. Plus, we’ve added fund support and made key improvements across the platform.

New features

KPI Heatmap

Based on customer demand, we have introduced a KPI Heatmap feature. This is part of the KPI Analyzer, and goes one level deeper to show you model predictions and data trends for each vendor mapped to every KPI, for your selected company:

KPI Heatmap for Starbucks, showing a spread of model predictions across vendor data sources for North America revenue.

KPI Heatmap for Starbucks, showing a relatively narrow spread of model predictions across vendor data sources for North America revenue.

This is useful to scan across your models and data sources at once, help understand the level of agreement (or not) between data sources. For example, if my Exabel model is predicting a beat, is this consistent across all of my data sources, or are some sources calling for a miss? Perhaps foot traffic is suggesting a beat while app & web traffic is showing weakness, prompting a deeper investigation.

To see the KPI Heatmap, open the KPI Analyzer for a company, and use the breadcrumbs (dropdown) in the page header to switch to the KPI Heatmap:

The KPI Heatmap is formed of 4 tabs:

  • Models: shows predictions for the current and next period; for your Exabel model, any custom models, and standalone models for each vendor metric.
  • Period to date: shows period-to-date (QTD / HTD) YoY data trends for each vendor metric.
  • Monthly: shows monthly absolute & YoY data trends for each vendor metric.
  • Weekly: shows weekly absolute & YoY data trends for each vendor metric.

Finally, in each tab, you can sort on most table columns by clicking on the column header.

KPI Impact and predictions table

We now calculate the KPI Impact as the correlation between KPI surprise (beat/miss) and the 1-day share price reaction, over all historical periods, and show this in a graphical indicator next to each KPI in the KPI Analyzer.

KPI Impact - correlation values can be viewed by hovering over the graphical indicator

In the KPI Analyzer, we have also released a new predictions table view. This is found in the "Predictions" widget, toggled with the table icon, and shows quarterly model predictions against actual/consensus.

Data Trends

While a lot of our feature development has focused on KPI analysis, we are also cognizant of the significant value of alternative data in deeper fundamental analysis. Many vendors have metrics that may not map neatly onto quarterly KPIs, but are nonetheless useful for understanding the longer-term health of the business. Furthermore, while many of these metrics have been loaded and curated as part of Exabel's vendor integrations, they require delving deep into Data Explorer or Plotter to retrieve and plot them.

To address these issues, we have designed Data Trends as a single view for all curated metrics from the vendors you subscribe to, including non-KPI focused metrics:

Data Trends shows data across your vendor subscriptions in a grid of charts.

In Data Trends, it is also possible to add comparison companies, switch between chart and table views, and toggle between raw / weekly / monthly aggregations as well as YoY change.

To navigate to Data Trends, first search for a company, then use the dropdown menu at the top of the page to switch to the Data Trends page:

Fund support

Plotter: It is now possible to search for exchange traded funds (ETFs) and listed funds, and plot fund prices using the Close_Price signal.

Improvements

  • KPI Analyzer
    • When in the KPI Analyzer for any company, the breadcrumb (dropdown) in the page header now allows back to the main KPI Analyzer overview.
    • In the overview page, we now show a waiting indicator if an Exabel model is scheduled / waiting to be run (this is a very short-lived state, and almost never experienced by end-users).
    • In the Models page, we now show the model ID in the model details popup. This is useful if you want to export model results via API, in which case you will need the model ID.
    • In the Mappings page for a ratio KPIs (e.g. margin, YoY growth, comp sales), when sorting mappings by error, they are now sorted by MAE, which is the displayed error value, rather than MAPE.
  • Watchlists
    • It is now possible to edit watchlists from the Library, from the landing page, and anywhere they can be selected, simply by clicking on the watchlist.
    • When viewing / editing watchlists, the number of companies / entities is now always shown.
  • Dashboards
    • Tables can now be cloned when editing a dashboard. This is useful when creating dashboards with multiple tables, by reusing columns from 1 table and changing the companies/entities being displayed.
    • When a quant portfolio strategy is inserted as a widget (only available for quant customers), show the strategy name as the widget title.
  • Charts
    • X-axis tick position and formatting can now be customized.
    • Series labels can now be configured to show only the company/entity name. This is useful for charts that show only 1 signal with potentially multiple companies/entities, where the chart title can be used to describe the signal.
  • Financial models: Improved design / styling of table display.
  • DSL: The Similarweb API signals (e.g. sweb_visits()) now support the point-in-time functions as_of() and revisions(), with an assumed lag of 3 days.

Bug fixes

  • KPI Screener: Fixed an edge case where the point-in-time est. error was not displayed even when available.
  • KPI Analyzer: Corrected date range on revisions charts, which previously cut-off relevant data when viewing revisions for historical quarters.
  • KPI Analyzer: Fixed an issue where an error message was shown when trying to view details of unsubscribed mappings.
  • Dashboards: Fixed an issue where the UI allowed setting a unit on a signal when the suffix was explicitly set to "None".
  • Charts: Fixed an issue where quick transforms where not applied when downloading a chart.
  • Plotter: Fixed missing y-axes when opening charts from Data Explorer, Library, or Financial Models.
  • Financial Models:
    • Fixed an issue where saving subsequent changes of a financial model failed.
    • Switching company in the page header will now open the financial model for the new company instead of resetting to the company overview page.
    • Fixed an issue where the UI allowed setting a unit on a signal when the suffix was explicitly set to "None".
  • Alerts: Fixed a style issue of email address in the dropdown.
